As an executive coach, I often hear leaders express a sense of resignation when it comes to their personal growth. “I’ve always been this way,” or “It’s too late for me to change,” are familiar refrains. Yet, these statements couldn’t be further from the truth. Thanks to the science of neuroplasticity, we now know that the brain remains adaptable and capable of change throughout our lives.


What is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's remarkable ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections. This capacity enables us to learn new skills, adapt to changes, and even recover from injuries. Scientists once believed that the brain’s structure was relatively fixed after childhood. However, groundbreaking research over the past few decades has debunked this myth, proving that our brains remain malleable well into adulthood.

Dr. Michael Merzenich, often called the “father of neuroplasticity,” has demonstrated through studies that the adult brain can undergo significant changes in response to experience and practice. His work has been pivotal in showing that even as we age, we have the capacity to rewire our brains, enhancing cognitive function and emotional resilience.

Neuroplasticity operates on the principle of “use it or lose it.” When we engage in repetitive thoughts or behaviours, we strengthen the neural pathways associated with them.   2. Challenge Limiting Beliefs: When you catch yourself saying, “I can’t,” pause and reframe it to, “What if I tried?” This simple shift can disrupt old neural pathways and encourage new perspectives.

  3. Learn Something New: Whether it’s a language, instrument, or skill, the act of learning strengthens neural networks and enhances cognitive flexibility.

  4. Seek Feedback: Constructive feedback provides insights into blind spots and helps you develop new approaches to problem-solving and leadership.
